The ‘Career Spotlight’ series has the goal to introduce you to some of our team members and demonstrate how we focus on their professional development.

His name is Lewis Graham, but everybody knows him as Samson.

He joined our team in April 2016 as a mechanic reliability engineer for the RHF/CWC/SY, Hot Strip Mill. Since then, his career has developed within AM/NS Calvert.

He was appointed an asset team manager for the roughing mill in the HSM in May 2019. After almost two years in that role, he was promoted to area maintenance manager for the PLTCM & RSC, CRM in July 2021. Samson has experienced such a path with us.

Let's learn more about Samson's career path.

What was position and role(s) before becoming a leader?

Asset Team Mgr for the Roughing Mill in the HSM (05/19 – 07/21)

Responsible for the various activities of the Asset Maint team and managing the R&M budget for the Roughing Mill. Lead in the successful completion of many large outage jobs, including replacing two sets of 110K# mill spindles, repair of E2 Gearbox, replacement of R2 MaeWest blocks, releveling of 6 mill roller tables, replacement of the screw-down assemblies at R2, and countless others.

We have resolved a long-standing issue involving failed BUR's by discovering a missing flow orifice from the original install.

I was responsible for keeping my team motivated and engaged in making improvements and executing work through the Co-Vid crisis with reduced budgets, reduced contractor usage, etc… Made dramatic improvements in housekeeping and basement parts organization. My team & I reduced the RM working ratio from 5.9% to 3.5% during my time there.

Mech. Reliability Engr for the RHF/CWC/SY in the HSM (04/16 – 05/19)

Responsible for managing major outage works and logistics for RHF internals and developing recuperator/combustion air duct replacement plan (~$15M). Worked extensively with ops & maint to strive to get the furnaces on a 3-year major outage rotation to help reduce contractor usage and costs. Designed & implemented a cooling strategy to reduce cooldown times for outages to maximize repair time dramatically.

Responsible for working directly with maintenance and operations to improve equipment reliability and delay rates by leading RCA investigations as a result of substantial delay events and troubleshooting repeat delay events, as well as regular reporting on delay rates. Also responsible for failure investigations during non-delay-related failure of major equipment such as scale-pit pumps, heat exchangers, and gearboxes. In addition, I helped with RCA's in several other areas, including the RM, and laid out the costs and CapEx change plans for the RM Table Roll replacement project (~$10M).

I approach each day as a learning opportunity, and each week is a new opportunity to do things better than you did the previous week. Today's records are tomorrow's standards, and we can never stop striving to get better and more efficient at everything we do.

I try to be as approachable as possible for my team members while still setting high expectations and goals to achieve as an organization.

What does Calvert represent in your career development?

Since joining Calvert, I have gained a significant amount of experience in both the HSM and now in the CRM. This, combined with my previous Melt Shop experience, has gained me a unique overall perspective on the Steel Industry. I intend to continue to develop myself and my team here at Calvert for years to come. I thoroughly enjoy the mix of cultures that we get to interact with here at Calvert. I feel like this provides us with unique learning experiences that would not be possible elsewhere.

What is a characteristic, trait, or belief that helps define who you are?

Dedication to the cause and willingness to do whatever it takes to make improvements happen for as long as it takes. I believe everyone's goal should be to work tirelessly with a laser focus towards making their area of influence better each and every day. Safely of course.

About him

I grew up on a 200-acre grain farm in central KY. Both of my parents were Engineers for the Federal Government, and we farmed as well. So, needless to say, we were always very busy. This is where I learned my work ethic and a great deal of technical knowledge on how equipment functions and how critical maintenance is to a successful operation. I graduated from the University of KY in 2003 with a BS in Chemical Engineering. I was a Process Engineer and Production Coordinator for a small foam production facility for 2-yrs before joining the steel industry in 2005. I spent 8-yrs at North American Stainless as an EAF Process Engineer and Operations Supervisor (Mgr). Next, I spent 3-yrs as the EAF Process Engineer for Outokumpu. I then came to AM/NS in April 2016, where I held the abovementioned roles.

A focus of interest in personal life.

I like spending time with my wife & 2 daughters and anything saltwater-related, especially snorkeling and Off-Shore fishing.
